It's About Water Quality
Today (August 28, 2010) I had the pleasure of joining Jay Leverone, Senior Scientist with the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program and Walt Avery, recently retired (30 Years) Head of Bay Studies for the City of Tampa, at the Tampa Bay Watch, Great Bay Scallop Search. While we didn't find any scallops in our transects near Tarpon Key, I got a lesson in the meaning of water quality from two men that have spent their lives studying the subject. What I learned was that we know very little about what is a very complex subject. The one thing that everyone could agree on was that water quality is critical to a healthy and vibrant bay. The other lesson I took away from the experience is the need for a citizens' initiative to convince politicians to fund the critical research being done by these dedicated scientists. That's just the kind of work we're doing at Sarasota Bay Watch and why your membership and participation are so important. Together we can show policy makers that we care about the bay that brings us pleasure and drives our economy.
Best Regards
Rusty Chinnis, President
